The art of Stunt – How to Catch Publicity for your business or yourself!
We should teach in school Publicity-the art of publicity stunt.
I am not talking Janet Jackson wardrobe “malfunction”; That was just cheesy. This is inspiring!
The winter before last, a New York City comedian has hit a home run for himself and the Swedish furniture retailer, IKEA, with an inspired play PR. On Monday, January 7, two years ago, Mark Malkoff, IKEA and moved to New York City apartment was to “smoking for cockroaches.
The story is that had nowhere to stay (funny, his wife seems to have found a place!) So named Sven or Nils or whoever runs IKEA and asked if he could sleepover.
Has no slouch itself, IKEA has welcomed the press with open arms. Malkoff stayed for several days.
The result?
Both comedian and IKEA scored big time. Malkoff got released immediately and took a documentary by the agreement (ie published later). He also pointed to one of the other companies crazy, 171 Starbucks-where he visited all NYC Starbucks 171 sites over a period of 24 hours.
In a classic, win-win, IKEA kicks are “goodwillometer” up a few notches and got tons more eyes to spice a normally cold months retail.
The comedian came to the right place. IKEA is no stranger to unconventional marketing.
The Swedish innovative adorned by subway cars in Japan with IKEA furniture. IKEA wearing bus stops in Manhattan to show that IKEA could make “any place” beautiful.
It’s not that hard to think about these things. I’ve always been a flood of terrible ideas to promote my steps to the fore! book.
The hard part has the guts to apply.
Especially when you can not or do not want to throw a ton of money on it.
It’s easy to do things like this, when you have a fat wallet or a year to renew the budget year ending if not in use.
It is not so impressive when Hershey mounts a big Hershey kiss the top of the Empire State Building in NYC and takes former Apprentice “did or not?” Finalist Amy Henry and Nick Warnock (how easy it is to forget the few years later) to give the public a quick smooch.
Or for a bra company to take the plunge and send 100 beautiful women in London, England intersection in front of the National Gallery.
The women, wearing only a bra and panties, stopped the movement to highlight the company’s new Wonderbra Multi Plunge Bra.
The ripples quickly spread across the ocean.
But the beauty of things that IKEA was one that was pulled away from a little guy with a great idea.
Well done all around!
And the best part is that the little guy could be you!
